Purification of Salt Water

Do we all know that earth has 70% water and 30% land? But we cannot consume this plenty of water directly since the major portion of 96% is saltwater. To consume this saltwater, it has to be treated through a process called desalination to convert it into freshwater. Desalination is the process of removing salt from seawater and making it available for consumption. Desalination has two methods- distillation and reverse osmosis. Distillation involves evaporation and condensation. Here, salt water when heated, water evaporates, leaving down salt. This evaporated vapor is then by condensation process, made into freshwater, ready for consumption. Reverse osmosis process involves a pre-treatment process in which large unwanted particles are removed but still has salt in it. Then, the saltwater is passed at high pressure through a semi-permeable membrane that has minute holes in it capable of filtering salt and other minerals. As a result, we get water free of salt. But to make it good for consumption, this water is treated again adding few minerals.
